Why Your CPAP Has a Humidifier: Air-Conditioned Bedrooms and Dry Air
Aircon keeps the bedroom cool, but the air it leaves behind can feel dry through a CPAP mask. Here is how the humidifier on each ResMed machine helps.

How a CPAP humidifier helps when you sleep in an air-conditioned bedroom
In Malaysia, many of us sleep with the air conditioner on every night. The room feels cool and comfortable, but air-conditioned air is usually drier than the air outside. With CPAP, a steady flow of that air passes through your nose, and sometimes your mouth, all night long. This is the main reason CPAP machines come with a humidifier, and it is worth understanding before you choose one.

Why aircon air can feel dry
An air conditioner cools a room, and it also pulls moisture out of the air as it runs. That is part of why a bedroom can feel crisp and less sticky than the corridor outside. For most people this is pleasant. For someone breathing through a CPAP mask, that cooler, drier air goes straight into the nose and throat for the whole night.
Some people notice a dry nose, a dry mouth or a scratchy throat in the morning. Others notice nothing at all. It varies from person to person, and from room to room. A small room with the aircon set low feels different from a larger room cooled by a ceiling fan.
What a humidifier does in a CPAP machine
A CPAP humidifier adds moisture to the air before it reaches your mask. On the AirStart 10 and the AirSense 10 AutoSet, a small water tub sits in the machine and warms the water gently. The air picks up some moisture on its way through, so it feels less dry when you breathe it in.
The humidifier does not change the pressure your doctor has set. It changes how the air feels. That is why people describe it as a comfort feature: it is there to make the nights easier to keep up with.
The three machines and how each one handles humidity
ResMed AirStart 10: built-in HumidAir
The AirStart 10 has a built-in HumidAir humidifier. It is an auto-adjusting (APAP) machine that you plug in and start with one button. For a first-time user, or a parent who does not like gadgets, this keeps things simple while still adding moisture to the air. Buy from RM4,500, or rent at RM280 / month.
ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet: integrated humidifier with Climate Control
The AirSense 10 AutoSet has an integrated humidifier with Climate Control, which is designed to manage humidity for you as the night goes on. It also has AutoRamp and EPR. People who sleep in a cold room, or who expect to adjust comfort settings with their doctor's guidance, often look at this one. Buy from RM6,500, or rent at RM450 / month.

ResMed AirMini: waterless HumidX
The AirMini is a compact travel APAP, and it does not use a water tub. Instead, it uses waterless humidification called HumidX, which works together with the mask setup. This keeps the machine small enough for work trips or a weekend back in the kampung. It is available to buy only, from RM4,900, and is not offered for rent.
Things to think about before you choose
- How cold is the bedroom? If the aircon runs low all night, a humidifier with more control may matter more to you.
- Do you breathe through your mouth? People who do often notice dryness more. Ask your doctor about the mask type too. Masks are bought separately, from RM600 for the mask only.
- Who will use it? A one-button machine suits some people. Others prefer more comfort settings.
- Will you travel? If you often sleep away from home, think about whether a travel machine with HumidX fits your routine.
If you are not sure, write down how you sleep now: aircon on or off, fan or no fan, nose or mouth breathing. Take the list to your doctor, then use our help-me-choose questions to narrow down the choice.
Air-conditioned bedrooms in every part of Malaysia
Whether you live in a condo in Kuala Lumpur, a terrace house in Melaka or a kampung home near Kota Bharu, the question is the same: how does the air in your bedroom feel at night? Humid weather outside does not always mean humid air inside a cooled room.
