A Simple Morning Routine for Your CPAP Mask

A few minutes each morning keeps your CPAP mask pleasant to wear. Here is a simple routine for the cushion and frame.

A Simple Morning Routine for Your CPAP Mask

An easy daily routine for cleaning your CPAP mask cushion and frame

Your CPAP mask sits against your face for the whole night. By morning, the cushion has picked up natural skin oils and a little moisture, and the frame has been handled in the dark. A short routine after you wake up keeps the mask pleasant to put on again at night, and it only takes a few minutes once it becomes a habit.

This article covers the mask cushion and frame only, in general terms. Other parts of the setup have their own care steps, which you can find in your machine's user guide.

Start with the manufacturer's instructions

Every mask comes with a user guide from its manufacturer. It shows how the parts come apart, what to clean them with and what to avoid. Masks differ, so the guide for your mask always comes first. If anything in this article differs from it, follow the guide. If you no longer have the paper copy, keep a note of your mask's model name so you can find the right instructions again.

What you need

  • A clean basin or sink.
  • Clean water.
  • A mild soap, ideally one without strong fragrance or added moisturiser.
  • A clean, dry towel or cloth to lay the parts on.

Unless your mask's instructions say otherwise, avoid strong cleaners such as bleach, alcohol or scented products. They can be harsh on the soft cushion material and may leave a smell you notice at night.

The cushion and frame are the parts to look after each morning.

The morning routine, step by step

  1. Take the mask off and disconnect it from the tube.
  2. Separate the cushion from the frame, the way your mask's guide shows. Go gently; there is no need to force any clip.
  3. Wash the cushion in mild soapy water, rubbing it lightly with your fingers, especially the part that touched your face.
  4. Wash the frame the same way.
  5. Rinse both parts well with clean water, so no soap is left behind.
  6. Shake off the extra water and lay the parts on a clean towel to air dry.

That is the whole routine. Most people find it fits easily between brushing their teeth and making breakfast.

Drying: air, shade and patience

Let the cushion and frame air dry on their own. Choose a clean, airy spot indoors, out of direct sun. Many manufacturers advise keeping mask parts away from direct sunlight and heat, so the windowsill and the car dashboard are not good places. A towel on a shelf in a well-ventilated room works well.

Malaysian mornings can be humid, so drying may take a little longer than you expect. Before you put the mask back together at night, check that every part is fully dry.

Small habits that help the mask stay pleasant

  • Wash your face before bed, so less oil and skin cream reaches the cushion.
  • Keep the clean mask in a covered place during the day, away from dust.
  • Look at the cushion as you wash it. If it seems torn, stiff or out of shape, check your mask's guide and ask us about a new mask.
  • Wash your hands before you handle the clean parts.

If you are helping an older parent, doing the routine together for the first few mornings makes it easier for them to carry on alone.

When you are still choosing

If you have not chosen a mask yet, ease of cleaning is one small thing to think about alongside comfort and the type your doctor suggests. Masks are bought separately, from RM600 for the mask only, in nasal, nasal pillows and full face types. You can see the machines in our CPAP machines, or answer a few help-me-choose questions. Delivery covers every location in Malaysia, including George Town, Petaling Jaya and Johor Bahru.
